Books, Who Needs Them?

The girls got together and bought me a library this Christmas. Along with this Kindle Paper White, I received a CD with hundreds of rights-free books. I'm currently reading John Irving's Last Night in Twisted River. And, just before Christmas, another book, a real one, came my way via Amazon and this one had my name printed inside it.

A Box of Birds is a novel I watched being created and, as I liked the premise, donated a small amount of money towards it being published. As a reward, I get the hard-back free and my name in the back as one of the contributors. If your chosen book does not reach enough support to get published, you get refunded. Very cool! YOU too, can help publish a book and, if you like what you see, join Unbound and read about the project.

I remember ten years ago suggesting e-readers might well be the future. Everyone I mentioned this to laughed. The future has well and truly arrived. However, I don't think books will ever disappear, they are just too lovely to own and read and, with the help of crowd-publishing they'll hopefully be with us far into the future. But the convenience of e-readers does mean they're going to become increasingly rare. And hence expensive and exclusive. The writing for books, so to speak, is on the wall.

That's It Folks!

The gate is now shut. With no one around, it's time to turn off the lights and leave. It's been fun and maybe one day someone will...
